Meeting the Australian Study Requirement for Visa Application

  • To meet the Australian study requirement for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) Points-tested, Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190), or Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491), you must have completed an eligible qualification that requires at least 2 academic years of study, or multiple qualifications resulting in a total of at least 2 academic years of study.
  • To be eligible, the study must have been completed in Australia, over a period of at least 16 calendar months, while you held a visa that allowed you to study.
  • The eligible qualification(s) must be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) and instruction must be in English.
  • The eligible qualification(s) must be a bachelor’s degree or higher, a diploma, an advanced diploma, or a trade qualification, and must have been completed at an Australian educational institution that is authorised to teach international students on a student visa.
  • English language proficiency courses or enabling programs do not count towards the Australian study requirement.
  • Two academic years of study equals 92 weeks of registered study, based on the duration of the course as registered by CRICOS. Only successfully completed study counts towards the requirement.
  • Credits and exemptions for prior learning may reduce the amount of study required to meet the requirement, but can only be used if accepted as part of “recognized prior learning” (RPL) and cannot be used to meet the requirement on its own.
  • The two academic years of study cannot be completed in less than 16 calendar months even if you have received RPL.
  • The 16 calendar months must have been spent physcially in Australia.
  • If you have completed a course that is longer than the standard duration as registered by CRICOS, you will only be credited for the standard duration.
  • You can only use study credits towards the Australian study requirement if they are part of the award of the qualification and your academic transcript reflects this.
  • Credit for study completed overseas or in non-CRICOS registered courses can only be used as part of RPL and cannot be used to meet the Australian study requirement directly.
  • You can use a combination of qualifications to meet the Australian study requirement, as long as they add up to at least 2 academic years of study and meet the other eligibility criteria.
