How to claim partner points in point-based visas

Are you applying for an Australian Skilled Migration visa such as a Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491), Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa, or Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) – point-based? If you have a spouse or de facto partner who is also applying for the same subclass of visa as you, their qualifications can earn you additional points on your application.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • If your spouse or de facto partner meets the following criteria, you can earn 10 points:
    • ✅ Applying for the same subclass of visa as the primary applicant
    • ✅ Not an Australian permanent resident or citizen
    • ✅ Under 45 years old at the time the invitation to apply for the visa was issued to the primary applicant
    • ✅ Nominated a suitable skilled occupation from the applicable list of skilled occupations.
    • ✅ Assessed by the relevant assessing authority as having suitable skills for the nominated occupation, and the assessment was not for a Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) visa
    • ✅ Has competent English
  • If you do not have a spouse or de facto partner, or if your spouse or de facto partner is an Australian permanent resident or citizen, you can still earn 10 points.
  • If your spouse or de facto partner meets the following criteria, you can earn 5 points:
    • ✅ Applying for the same subclass of visa as the primary applicant
    • ✅ Not an Australian permanent resident or citizen
    • ✅ Has competent English
